Peru: a Chance to Experience the Unknown
Peru has a rich cultural history dating back to ancient cultures such as the Incas. The Inca Trail is a popular route stretching 33km through the Andes mountains to the lost Incan city of Machu Picchu, through cloud forests and herds of grazing llama. There are many such historic sites in this wonderful country, the Incan Trail is merely one of the best known. Less popular areas are generally more rugged and unexplored, perfect for the adventurous traveller.
The other major geographical aspect of Peru is of course the Amazon rainforest, which offers a wholly different experience to the Andes. Trekking through this vibrant, wild landscape is sure to make any traveller feel like they''re in the middle of an Indiana Jones movie. The Parque Nacional Manu is a responsibly managed area that preserves the wildlife and environment, allowing travellers to see areas and wildlife usually inaccessible to humans. The Parque has official guides who are the best bet for seeing the area safely, as well as making the most of the opportunities available. It is one of the things to remember, wherever you travel. Having a good, reliable guide is essential in such a vast and varied place as Peru.
Of course, with adventurous activities there comes a greater risk than just lounging on a beach in the Canary Islands. Peru is not a country with the same infrastructure as the UK ??? healthcare in rural areas is not to the same standards as the West, and travellers may need to be airlifted to the capital, Lima, for treatment. All of which costs money, and which may not be covered by any old travel insurance policy.
Mui Aponta recommends that you always take out annual travel insurance. He''s recently opted for worldwide travel insurance from AA Travel Insurance as he plans to travel further afield this year.
